Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young kid. Her aunt worked during the night shift as a nurse so she could pursue her love for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced her to DuVernay. DuVernay learned by example that art can be an avenue for action. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through the arts. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma and decided to make an documentary on the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay began producing television news as an elementary school student. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to watch and search the home of a particular juror. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism tasks and decided to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. She was hired in 1999 and established her own firm that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
